You should try with a USB-RS232 converter (preferebly isolated). Remember to set the baudrate to 4800 baud.

That mean you need  UART to USB converter between this two parts.

I am quite sure that this would destroy the UART to USB converter because it only handles 0 to 3.3 or 5 V, and this output is probably ±12 V.

For RS232, shipaoy you are sure right !
I could eventually read the ST50 NMEA sentences on the inspector windows, using a real RS232 to USB adapter !
(and not an RS232 "TTL" !) .

Regarding the version, actually (i.e. since 2008) NMEA is in version 4.x My GP32 Furuno is using version 2, with RS232 (2006) !
The problem with NMEA is that they seem so money minded that they try to sell any bit of information, beurk, pouah ! I lost 2 months ! It sucks !

By the way, the same RS232 adapter works fine with my GP32 !

That point is solved, makes me feel much better !

If you want a higher quality adapter, this isolated converter works both for RS422 and RS232, and is very robust:

Thanks a lot Didier for the article !

I just want to complete something : you titled your document "Connecting 'legacy' (15y +) NMEA devices to your Rpi"

Actually it's not useful only for old devices. I bought a Nasa clipper wind system on year ago. I was not able to get the NMEA sentences on my OP system with my usb rs 486/422 converter until i sent an e-mail to Nasa support. They told me that the inteface is RS 232. So i tried to connect it following your article instructions. Now it's working like a charm !

I can now get the wind speed and direction.

Next step building a pypilot auto-pilot !   Smile
