General Smartwatch Discussion - Saqqara - 2016-08-16 This is not a feature request -- certainly don't want to distract from anything I see brewing in 0.9.0 -- but good things sometimes come from daydreaming, and ideally we can find something easily mashed up without much coding. I'm sure more than a few of us have thought about the promise of smart watches for display of instrument data. There are already a few ways to do that presently or under development: Sailoog has referred to this project to get Teppo Kurki's excellent Sailgauge on a Galaxy Gear S2 watch: https://github.com/e-sailing/sailgauge/tree/watch This guy has a Java project akin to Openplotter, and has made a Pebble watch app that connect to the server via websockets. Not sure what it would take to connect to openplotter. https://github.com/OlivierLD/pebble/tree/master/NMEA.app There are of course some options for iWatch. http://pocketmariner.com/mobile-apps/boatbeacon/tips-on-using-seanav-and-boat-beacon-apple-watch-apps/ I wonder also about a more generalized approach using notifications: https://pushover.net/ Maybe MQTT or some of the other facilities developed for Openmarine project could tie in to a watch? I don't understand some of that stuff yet. Another option for Pebble may be this: http://www.codewithasmile.co.uk/boat/boat-remote/ or this app which can display data from json: http://keanulee.com/pebblecards/#api I'm attracted to the Pebble Time because it is very inexpensive ($60 refurbished sometimes), has a backlit color e-ink display and long battery life. (Note: Pebble just sold its assets to Fitbit and the platform is doomed.) RE: General Smartwatch Discussion - Sailoog - 2016-08-18 Good point. We are focussed on a flexible system to gathering and sharing data, but what we do with data is important. Maybe we should open a dedicated work area/forum/team to work on instruments. |
