USB Hubs - seaspray - 2017-08-18
I'm running OP on a Pi 3. Openplotter is a superb system that (mostly) behaves as I expect.
However, I'm just adding a SDR for AIS and I acquired a USB hub

plus a 12v -> 5v converter to power it. However, the PI is only able to recognise devices attached to the hub if I feed the upstream USB through an unpowered USB2.0 hub before the pi.
i.e. This works...

I've tried swapping the cable (A to B) that came with it but it'no better.
dmesg shows errors along the lines of

I found a close-up picture on Amazon of one that someone had taken apart because it smoked. The chip shown in the picture is a FE1.1S.

Well, after much trying I still can't get this hub to work. I also can't see how to (non destructively) open it up, so for now I'm going to give up on it.
Does anyone have a link for a powered hub that definitely works... ?

Right - I'm still on the USB hub issue.
It seems that powered USB hubs are definitely not the Pi 3 best friend....
I bought a TP Link unit (see previous post) and it works OK. However it's a 12v power supply and all my other devices are 5V - I'd like to keep it that way. Additionally, the form factor is quite large...
So, I've been doing a _lot_ of investigation. I finally got the unit that I originally purchased apart and it's controlled by a pair of HS8836 Ic's. I've been unable to track down a definitive datasheet for this chip but there some evidence ( https://detail.1688.com/offer/520006552865.html - second image ) that this is an alternate name for FE1.1S
More research has led me to believe that the issue revolves around hubs back-powering the PI. I do see -71 errors which are usually related to power supply issues....
I've purchased one of these - https://thepihut.com/products/7-port-usb-hub-for-the-raspberry-pi - which are specifically designed to solve this issue. When it arrives and I've tested it, I'll let you know how I get on.

my hub was back-powering to the the PI all i did was cut a slit in the usb cable to the pi and cut the power line..
mine likes somethings and not others..

The hub from thepihut.com works fine. I had managed to get one of the non-working hubs to talk to my pi by cutting the power track on the board internally. Getting the unit apart was not pretty - so only for my desk research... The pihut.com one is cheap enough and seems to work perfectly.

Hi,
Assuming back powering could be an issue I simply removed the problem by cutting the data cable between the Pi and the hub, and then I reconstructed it 'forgetting' to reconnect the + 5 VDC wire. It has always worked nicely since then (12 month ago) .
I am using this hub https://www.pearl.fr/article/PX1276/hub-actif-7-ports-usb-2-0 but the power jack could be a source of "faux contact" in the hub.
Maybe I will strip the plastic package and solder directly the 5 V power supply to the hub's PCB
