Your approach to creating a generic, configurable XDR mapping seems viable to me.

Have you considered turning this into a configurable server plugin? That would make it much more approachable:
- compiling and running a separate C app as a daemon is rather daunting to most users
- a plugin would be installable in the App store
- a plugin provides the configuration form out of the box, when you create a schema for your plugin config data
- a plugin is cross platform out of the box

I have no clue on where to start with a plugin but I'll give it a bash. Can you point me to a starting point? A demo plugin or something?
