I know about OpenCPN functionality. It has some cons.: 1) big application and  only use it for watchdog  is a waste of resources. 2) because it's a separate application and  not a part of openplotter it's an additional point of failure. Maybe it's better to have all useful functionality in one application?

Mobile application is good , but it always requires second mobile.

From actually living mostly on the hook I haven't actually found that to be the case in the real world - opencpn in "tickover' draws very little resources. Load HTOP to have a look at resources used, better than TOP. If it's a point of failure then something is wrong and needs fixing! Both openplotter & opencpn are rock solid in my experience. They have to be! Cool

Added advantage in leaving opencpn running is that you can keep an eye on what the boat has been up to >

This is an excellent check on if you've had a tiny little drag but not enough to trigger the alarm. Also handy for seeing just where the hook is. After adding some solar last year the Pi onboard is never turned off.

Though a mobile is probably just as quick and easy as an alarm, it just always goes off when you dinghy ashore or move anchorage but forget to turn it off! :Smile

As a full time liveaboard on the hook I really don't see the point adding more python to openplotter when there isn't really a problem to fix. Smile
