Hi Ted,
Your idea of an automotive power steering motor won me over.
For my 13m / 10tons boat, we produced a Renault clio engine at 70 €.
After fitting it with a toothed pulley (autohelm 3000/4000 style), it uses the original pilot's toothed belt.
We tried it this last weekend on Sean's pypilot and everything went wonderfully after some groping on the gain settings.
It remains to try the gps and wind modes of tinypilot and to polish the finishes of the coupling.
During the tests, we noted currents of 4 Amp Max, which seems quite reasonable!
Thanks again for this idea
cordially
ps:for the pypilot plugin problem on opencpn 5.2.4, I recompiled the source file of Sean's github and everything works!
