I'm guessing you mean NMEA not NEMA.
2019-09-06, 06:37 AM
use a usb serial adapter for nmea 0183.
nmea 2000 needs a different type of serial adapter
which nmea spec. do you mean and what version of openplotter /raspberry pi.?
openplotter v 2.X is not ready for serial input yet.so if you are testing v 2 then you will have to wait.

Yes NMEA, thank you for the spell check, unfortunately it doesn't really answer my question.. although it makes it much more clear for anyone who may have been confused by what I meant... so there is that!
I have fixed my mistakes so hopefully no one else is confused

Thanks for your response Jim
Sorry, I guess I thought they nmea 0183/2000 were more similar like cat 5 is to cat 6 as a bad example. I have since done some reading/research and now have a rough understanding of the differences
So yes N2k and I am currently running Op1.2 on a Rpi 3B+ but I intend to move to the Rpi4 once everything is supported and working. but so far I am only messing about with that.
I am interested mostly interested in the Engine stats being display on my RPi monitor, there is an adapter I can buy that will connect the motor to a N2K network, but pointless unless I can see that data on a screen somewhere... I have a screen connected to my RPi so that seems like a logical place to start.
Cheers
Pete

n2k will need something like these to communicate to the pi.

If Signal K server on OpenPlotter 2.x works you can configure it to handle serial NMEA 0183.
Or what did the comment about 2.x not being ready for serial exactly mean?
One more N2K option: https://digitalyacht.co.uk/product/ikonvert-usb/

in the openplotter v2 .x app, the serial devices manager is greyed out and cant be installed yet as of my last check.
i have a serial gps working with signalk's serial on a orange pi zero.. i did not even think of that..

Conversion NMEA2K to NMEA193 can easily be done in OpenPlotter 2.00 beta via SignalK. You dont' need a serial connection for this setup.
Works perfect on my RPI4. See my other report about this setup with an image of the screen with GPS and AIS input from NMEA2K.
Bram
See image. Left under is the small canbus adapter with optical usb connection.

"You dont' need a serial connection for this setup." canbus adapter with optical usb connection is serial.usb=Universal Serial Bus
i do know what you mean you dont need the openplotter serial device to connect it to signalk
do you have a link to it.?
