I have a GPS (from Adafruit) hat on top, but it claims it uses GPIO 4 only, perhaps it is interacting with GPIO 17, will check when I get to the boat next weekend, I think it uses serial0 for sending the GPS data.

Yep, definitely the hat is using UART0. No wonder, thanks again!
