under voltage... WTF? - rastam4n - 2020-07-30

Okay I have spent many of hours and trial and errors making sure I have a suitable power supply starting with RPI 3b

This is my DC to DC converter

https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/power_products_(electrical)/dc-to-dc_converters/encapsulated/pse05-dc12-60

It is way more then I should ever need no matter what I connect to my RPI4B.

How can I now be getting under voltage warnings with my Rpi4?

All that is connected is

Oesenc map dongle
Keyboard
USB SSD https://geekworm.com/blogs/news/the-new-v3-0-version-of-raspberry-pi-x850-msata-ssd-extension-board-has-been-released-in-october
I am powering this hat directly from the power converter I linked above.

any ideas? the under voltage is consistently 50% of the time

Here is my 1: 1 backup from the boat.
I'm not an electrical engineer ...
I tried a lot too.
In the end I had to bring 5 V voltage to all 5 V inputs.
So it is with me

One more thing, I still have a USB stick from FRITZ! I can only do this with an active USB3 hub

Have you checked the voltage at the Pi with a multi meter? Set to MIN should show the minimum value.
What size and length is the cable from the buck power supply to the Pi? You can lose a lot of voltage with thin cables.

It's probably a wiring issue. It doesn't matter if the power is good. If the wiring is thin inside, the current that passes through it in burst moments is limited. Micro-USB connectors often have weak wiring and even the connector itself can be a cause of the problem.

I have a 10 amp converter and have had to work my way through the wire until the icon disappears. At home I have the rpi4 with the original source and it doesn't mark lack of energy except if I overclock at 2 Ghz in which case it appears occasionally. Although it could also be due to the use of the Argon One case that has an extra circuit and consumes some power.

Get a better USB micro cable, or better, solder the wire directly onto the board. This is what I do on the RPI3B+ that I use for commercial applications.
