Touchscreen for PI? - deanfourie - 2022-01-05

Hey guys! Great to see OpenMarine and OpenCPN still kicking strong! This is great!

I am after some recommendations on a good reliable touchscreen for the PI for use obviously for chart plotting etc.

Thanks in advance.

Inside or outside?

I have been using this screen at my Nav station for the last year: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082HWF2HW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As it is at the Nav station I usually use a mouse vs the touch screen, but when I have used the touch screen it works quite well.

Outside, I have just purchased a custom 15.6" waterproof, sunlight readable (1000nit, optically bonded, antiglare), fully dimmable (0-100%), 1080P, touchscreen.

I will get this one mounted and installed at the helm by about April, but feels really nice to use

Thanks for the reply.

Its actually for the cockpit. I was looking at something like this

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003645233243.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.10f16745W2KX8N&algo_pvid=5c41b0f7-606c-4682-8942-a9de2af20dd6&aem_p4p_detail=2022010602295011274099383387100046216692&algo_exp_id=5c41b0f7-606c-4682-8942-a9de2af20dd6-5&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000026631585158%22%7D&pdp_pi=-1%3B64.6%3B-1%3B-1%40salePrice%3BNZD%3Bsearch-mainSearch

I was thinking to obviously keep all electronics well covered, and just have the screen accessible to the elements.

Whats your thoughts.

Cheers

Hi, from a mechanical view, I would suggest to use something like this one:
https://www.waveshare.com/7inch-DSI-LCD-C.htm
Reason is that it will be very easy to have a nice and safe install of the display, since it is mounted "on top", you don't have to be so accurate when making the hole for the display.

I have some smaller 3.5" that looks like those, and they are really good looking. These will not be operated from Raspberry, using them for some extra info at different places in the boat, and at home:
https://4dsystems.com.au/products/4d-intelligent-hmi-display-modules/gen4-ftdi-display-modules/gen4-ft813-43ctp-clb
NB! These needs to be "programmed", no HDMI/DSI.

I have a very similar screen, the touch functionality was never very useful (small screen, with wet fingers on a moving ship). After a few months the 'mouse' pointer started to go haywire. I unplugged the touch cable, hooked up a wireless mouse and never looked back. The mouse gives so much more control that touch is just not worth it.
For me.

RE: Touchscreen for PI? - deanfourie - 2022-01-12

Yea the screen is great, ive upped the resolution but the touch on the PI is not very user friendly unless im doing something wrong.

The keyboard does not auto open when a text field is clicked.
Double pinch to zoom does not work
I cannot right click?

haha am I doing something wrong? Is there a better OS for the PI that natively support touch.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Touchscreen for PI? - Techstyle - 2022-01-12

this might help with the right click:
