So this is not a good sign if it stays lit because something else is communicating on your board. I suggest that you attach the controller by just the 4 wire without additional hats.
Ensure /dev/serial0 points to /dev/ttyAMA0
Try applying power to the controller at the exact moment you run avrdude. If you cannot get it working, please contact me by email and as a last resort I will send you a new controller.

Is there a chance you can try the tinypilot image to verify the motor controller?
Hi Sean, as I have repeatedly reminded, I don't understand software, except with copy and paste. If you have time and desire to explain I will follow you. The alternative for me is to wait until everything is ok.
I attach more photos, I don't know if they can be useful.

I suggest you try using tinypilot instead of openplotter and get it working to verify the hardware and motor controller. This has no configuration needed and should make it easier.
If you try again with openplotter please follow all the steps posted here:

I will work on improving the openplotter-pypilot integration, todo list is rather long already. each new version of openplotter breaks it, and same with signalk etc

Okay, Sean.
I finally saw my Chinese actuator working. Thanks for all.
Now I have to understand the calibration and configuration well ... we feel, thanks again and good wind, always in the face of Covid!

hii....don´t know how you now connected the two devices that are IRON-BLUE ALUMINUM SPEAR - MZFAISF-3 (TELESCOPIC ROUND HEAD).
A popular mistake ist to connect tx with tx and rx with rx on both sides but you have to connect tx with rx and rx with tx. Also you need to have the same GND for both devices.

this looks normal, what is the problem? Usually the terminal is not needed except for debugging but even then I use wifi.
