Sorry to budge in like this. If you are able to select any UART in the pypilot application than a USB-UART adapter would be a valid solution, except ... since the motorcontroller has a galvanic isolation on the UART input you will have to provide POWER and GND for the motorcontroller UART Opto coupler as well. Remember that USB-RS232c adapters have voltagelevels that range from -25V to +25 (I've rarely seen these extremes but the standard allows for them)
I' would suggest you use some Arduino style USB-UART adapter so you can provide the opto coupler with the necessary power. The adapter in the picture provides 5V power from the USB adapter.
There 's also a very handy adapter from DuPPA.net the Debug board quad It has 4 UART's that are independently galvanic isolated, so you have to provide power for the both sides of the communications lines.
I ordered a motor controller to replace the Autohelm 1000 that died on me during a stormy passage, when I receive it i will test both solutions and report back.
