Wish list for apps to be added to default openplotter noob/image
#1
Hello,

Can we create a thread to discuss which apps should be added into default openplotter 2.0 image?

I think it could be extended with some small command line utilities which are not there by default.

1. Utilities for USB troubleshooting
2. Utilities for networking
3. Utilities for serial communication
4. Utilities for I2C

Might be also some touch screen / touch pad related.

IoT stuff I think shoould be preinstalled.

network storage access stuff.

Thanks,

Of course, let's talk about this.

Now there is not a "default" OpenPlotter image. We have improved a lot the openplotter-gen scripts in charge of building openplotter and we can build multiple images (img and NOOBS) at the same time in one click.

We think that having multiple images according to different OP users profiles is a big improvement. We will also have a custom image and you will be able to choose not only what apps do you want to install but also customize some important settings like hostname, user name, password, network configuration... These custom images will be built automatically on demand and it will involve some servers infrastructure so it will need to be a paid service. We have started building this infrastructure and you may have already realized that our download center has changed: https://nx8035.your-storageshare.de/s/aGXQWGGqo7RG4fP

You are right, we have forgot an important profile, users who are also interested on IOT features. We could add this new image to the list. We have this right now.

OpenPlotter Starting (just pure marine stuff and required tools)
  • OpenPlotter Settings
  • OpenCPN installer
  • Signal K installer
  • Signal K Filter
  • Xygrib
  • Network
  • Dashboards
  • Serial
  • CAN
  • Kplex
  • Pypilot
OpenPlotter Headless (to install and use OP without monitor)
  • All OpenPlotter Starting apps
  • Acces point, ssh and remote desktop enabled.
OpenPlotter Moitessier HAT (out of the box image for this HAT)
  • All OpenPlotter Starting apps
  • Moitessier HAT
  • I2C sensors configured for the HAT
  • Pypilot configured for the HAT
  • Signal K configured for the HAT
OpenPlotter IOT (for makers)
  • All OpenPlotter Starting apps
  • I2C sensors
  • 1W sensors
  • Analog sensors
  • Actions (triggers and actions like sending emails, twitter and telegram messages, GPIO, MQTT...)

Optional tools (this is not an image, just a list of extra tools that can be installed anytime on any image above)

  • SDR AIS
  • MCS board
  • Docs
  • OpenPlotter Apps Template
What do you think?

mgrouch could you please provide details about this?:

Quote:1. Utilities for USB troubleshooting
2. Utilities for networking
3. Utilities for serial communication
4. Utilities for I2C

Might be also some touch screen / touch pad related.

network storage access stuff.

Are any of these requests included on any planed app? are you proposing new apps? any example?

Hi Sailoog,

what I'am missing is Synaptic. The first thing I install after a new setup. Why is this not included ?. However, it is very easy to install. And a handy tool to add plugins (and bsb3 charts !)

Bram

There are some reasons to not install synaptic. The first reason, common to other discarded tools, is SD space. We can not exceed 4 GB for img and NOOBS files and we need to be conservative with the included tools. The second one is that we can not make so easy to install and update packages from apt or synaptic because openplotter apps must be installed from openplotter-settings app and not manually.

Hello,

After playing for a while with SDR stuff I think

GQRX should be a part of openplotter distribution (at least an an option for those who have SDR sticks)

There is also NavTex decoder app. It works fine but it's in Java so it needs JDK.

http://www.frisnit.com/navtex/

It would have been nice to have better NavTex support in openplotter (similarly to weather fax)

And some documentation and utilities to share Iridium Satellite internet connection for the whole boat LAN.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Too much of a minority interest to be part of openplotter imho. Sailoog et al have spent a lot of time keeping the distro lean. And all easy enough for the user to add (i use a funcube dongle). Might be nice to have a page in the manual though Smile

openplotter-sdr app is on its way. It will have the same features as openplotter 1, AIS reception and radio reception with GQRX.

The rest of features you are proposing are out of the default SDR range (VHF). You need an upconverter to be able to listen to HF frequencies were navtex and weather fax live. You can not listen to VHF and HF simultaneously without switching the hardware and the antenna so we are talking about a separate app, maybe openplotter-hf. This will take some time if the dev team is not recruiting anybody else.

Heart your docs and your project. It deserves a good place in the hall of fame of OP implementations Smile
