NMEA 0183 generator needs a general revision too.
This is the road map:
Now still working on Actions, then we will revise I2C and we will ad support for BME280 sensors (temp, hum, press), NMEA 0183 generator revision...

Regarding UART management, Adrian at Wegmatt (the creator of the dAISy Hat for RPI) has a nice little instruction on how to disable serial bluetooth connection on RPI3 and move it to GPIO:

Open a terminal window on your Raspberry Pi and execute the following commands:
1. wget https://github.com/itemir/rpi_boat_utils...rt_control
2. chmod +x ./uart_control
3. sudo ./uart_control gpio
4. sudo reboot now

I'll have a read but in OP 0.9 the permissions problem did not exist. very odd!

I don't quite get what is going on but yes that releases ttyAMA0 and the GPS HAT appears there. I change my serial port in the NMEA 0183 tab of OP to ttyAMA0 and I have the serial port available after a reboot. All good. 

But I guess openplotter needs to test for RPi 3 and sort that out on install otherwise people are going to have trouble.

The bad news:

Signal K is suffering changes and they are affecting to most features of OpenPlotter. We have already rewrite some of them but others need still work. This is why this last image is still alpha.

The good news:

The main feature of this new image is a self-updating system. You will be able to apply all changes we are doing until you get an stable system without having to burn a new image: https://sailoog.gitbooks.io/openplotter-...ating.html

Is this the reason why my upgrade... [Upgrade from v0.10.0 to 0.17.0 causes Node & Signal K failure] fails? Details in this post-http://forum.openmarine.net/showthread.php?tid=1012I would be very grateful for any advice. it's been seen dozens of times but with no replies.
