[SOLVED] Raspberry 4 + moitessier hat / signalk -> opencpn: freeze
#11
Rspi 4.
Moitessier hat 1.
only signal k connection in opencpn.
Everything updated.

I am indoor but with a external GPS antenna close to the window.
OpenCPN does not freezes. Position fix is set quickly and is not lost.
I can not reproduce this issue.

Are you sure you have a good satellite view?
are you indoor?
have you tested this onboard?
Is your boat made of steel?

OK, I think I have something.

If I cover the antenna with a metallic plate to force a signal lost then signal k data for position becomes:

{
"longitude": null,
"latitude": null
}

but OpenCPN is not managing this ok. The expected behavior is to keep the last know position before signal lost but currently opencpn is placing the boat in lat 0, lon 0 or any erratic position.

Is this the issue all of you are experimenting?

In my case the position jump every second till when there's an input like 4333256 2233355 (or number like that) and at this point opencpn freeze.

and what says signal k for position when this happens to you?

Besides this opencpn wrong behavior, you have also a reception problem and you should improve your reception conditions:

Are you sure you have a good satellite view?
are you indoor?
have you tested this onboard?

It works for me. Obviously the GPS must receive. They are inside with antenna on the window:
Config .: PI4 -4giga with HAT Moitessier v.1 - all updated.
The only drawback that I have not been able to fix is the exact view of the pressure. See: https://i.imgur.com/8PwYYz7.png
and when you start the route you don't see the indications in the window:

On the PI4-2giga + 120 mega hard drive with imu 9250 and bme 280, everything is fine except the view in the "broken" window - it doesn't read anything!

Now I'm waiting for Sean to send me the "Controller" to work on Pypilot ... Smile

I did not delete the .opencpn directory yet because I'm not sure if it is still needed and if so, how exactly so I need to do it so I don't lose all my opencpn configuration.

I did a little more digging and it looks like I may be getting a GPS Fix...but what I am noticing is that GPS Status, the little graphic that shows the number of satilites in the dashboard goes blank.  When I switch back to the old connection, the satelites show up again.

to start opencpn from scratch remove the folder /home/pi/.opencpn
please if the issue persists please report to opencpn developers
I got the same difficulties : gps unstability, and OpenCPN freezing (25% CPU occupancy, i.e. one core occupied 100% (= looping ?) and impossibility to close OpenCPN but using task manager to terminate it. I also had the idea to uninstall / re-install but with few success.
I applied the Sailoog's advice to remove the directory .opencpn, we will see how it goes. More report later...

Hi, same configuration and same problems. OpenCPN freeze!  Huh

+1 same here. All updated, did clean install twice! Thanks for the thread, I hope this will be solved! I through it's freezes because of my maps or OpenGL but all the same even with the basemap.

There is some progress on this issue. I have tested an opencpn beta and the boat is no longer jumping when the signal is lost. We will see if this solves the freezing problem too. There is still a problem with the GPS status icon, they are working on it...
