Wiring Nasa Clipper mast head to USB serial
#1
Hi all,

I have a NASA clipper wind transducer and I'm trying to connect this to signalk via a RS422/RS485 USB serial adapter. Being new to all of this, I don't know where to map wires from the transducer to the serial adapter.

Based on the attached diagrams (first is from the transducer manual, the second from https://open-boat-projects.org/en/category/projects/) I would assume:

Transducer -> serial adapater
Black -> GND
Blue -> +RXD

This may be obvious but the USB serial adapeter has the following terminals:
T/R+
T/R-
RXD+
RXD-
GND

When I connect it all up, the RXD light flashes a few times and stops so I'm assuming this isn't wired up correctly.

You didn't attach the diagrams

does the Transducer say the blue line is +RXD - it should be the transmitter?  in any case I would connect the Blue to the RXD+ and the black to the RXD-.  if that doesn't work I would reverse them (Blue to RXD- and black to RXD+)

FWIW after reading that NMEA 0183 signal voltage should be 3v I checked my output and it's fluctuating between 9.0 and 9.1v. I also misread the labels on the PCB and wired it wrong initially, not sure if this could have damaged the instrument?

Thanks, I'll give that a try! I've also updated the post with the attachments.

Unfortunately that didn't resolve the issue. With blue connected to RXD+ and black to RXD- and then reversed, there was nothing received in signalk nor did the RX LED flash on the serial converter.

Update: I swapped the USB serial converter to another one I had and it works now - I guess it was just a faulty adapter.

If anyone else finds this thread trying to wire up the Clipper NASA wind transducer, blue wire goes to RXD+ and black wire goes to GND on the serial adapter.

do you have a link to the USB serial converter you are using ??
