Mouse/keyboard/touchscreen alternatives?

Just discovered this project.  Haven't loaded it on my Pi yet.

I'm thinking about a build for sailboat use (Catalina 36), probably mounted under the dodger; but maybe back at the pedestal.  I suppose it need not be submersible, but should at least be water resistant.

I don't want a keyboard & mouse in the cockpit.  Is there a waterproof (or waterproofable) touchscreen option folks are using?

I was also wondering about some kind of arrow key cluster or small joystick.  Would that be enough to operate everything in the app?

I think your best approach would be to put the PI and associated stuff below decks, then use WiFi to connect to an on-deck display. The advantage to this is that you can choose whatever works best in your situation, and use WiFi to connect it to Openplotter. An Android tablet that is in a waterproof case, or perhaps an IP-67 rated device. Why Android? You can load an Android version of OpenCPN on it and use Openplotter as your data source and/or you can use VNC for a direct connection with OpenPlotter.

I have a Samsung tablet mounted at my nav station and an Asus tablet that I can carry around the boat, and mount on the steering pedestal when I need it. It's not waterproof, but it is portable enough that if things get really wet I can just put it below deck.

Thanks for the replies.
I think a portable tablet would be great for typical 'chart plotter' use. I have an older iPad, with a waterproof case that I thought might work for that.

The use case I'm really thinking about would mostly be used as a multi-function instrument display, akin to B&G Triton².

Has anyone figured out an inexpensive, daylight readable, waterproof display? I can't seem to find anything that fits the bill, other than dedicated marine displays like the aforementioned.

FWIW, I am looking at building something with a Pi 2 and a 7" NHD-7.0-800480MB-ASXN-T-ND. I will also add mechanical keys for frequently used stuff. I have found a 7" TFT that does 780 cd/m2 that should work and intend to drive it through the DPI interface. I am looking at a target of no more than 6W power consumption.

I will build a case that should at least survive water spray.

This will be a project over the winter months though.

Very interested; I'd love to hear how it goes.  I also looked at the Newhaven displays.

I found it interesting that the resistive touch version is 780 cd/m2, while the plain one is 1000 cd/m2.

I presume you're planning something like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2453 (which uses up your I/O pins.. but maybe that's OK).  ...or do you have some other interfacing trick in mind?

Lots of them listed on ebay... around $100 for the smaller ones.

Just reading the specs, they have their own controller, a customizable U/I, and talk over UART. I don't think they'd do for a chart plotter, but for something like a wind/speed/depth instrument display, it might be worth looking at.

(btw: it seems like the same idea as this: https://nextion.itead.cc/, except they offer sunlight-readable versions)

Does anyone here have any experience with them?

That way I can select how many bits to use and also use a separate touch controller. That it uses most of the pins should not be that much of an issue. I guess that the display without touch has better brightness ls because the resistive layers block some light.
