module Radio - Satellite (for the future, suggestion for the todo list)
#1
Hello,

1. Happy New Year.

2. Thanks for developping OP. I sailed with OP1 thousands of miles with
pleasure to have a big screen and all the requested data useful to sail
safely and confortably.

3. There is one major problem with opensource tools, the absence of
mail client alternative to Airmail (https://sailmail.com - download :
http://www.siriuscyber.net/sailmail. If I never add problem to use it with
wine on my x86-64 laptop, I never manage to make it work on armf
(https://www.novaspirit.com/2019/04/15/run-x86-arm to install wine is oK on
stretcher, but not on buster, but airmail3.exe is not working.

4. I found pyAirmail project (https://github.com/SailingTools/pyAirmail)
which sound nice, but as my knowledge in python is none, as I wrote to the
author (https://github.com/SailingTools/pyAirmail/issues/1) , I am unable to
install it and of course to configure it. I did not find other project or
will of someone to rewrite Airmail in a way to have a multiplatform application.

5. I feel that this component could be integrated into OP as a new module, but it will need
some work on it to make it usable by people like me (users with little skill to tune, but no skill to develop).

6. It would be nice to have developpers (as I know that the core OP team is more than busy working on OP2) to work on pyAirmail to
give the product a format that could then integrate OP.

This is something we would love to make. As you said we are really busy now but we will work on this ASAP or guide to any volunteer.
Something else to investigate for this future openplotter-radio app: https://getpat.io/

I totally agree, some kind of communication integration would be nice. Both SSB and Sat. The new Icom 705 could be a candidate to start with and Iridium Go. While the latter is also a wifi access point there are a lot of fancy things one can do. Just take a look at the functions that the famous redbox does. On the other hand something to facilitate SSB email using the already present RPi4 would be nice, spending many hours playing with the various frequencies and try to get an email through would be a candidate to automate.

May I suggest an email server in OpenPlotter (it's complex and has its cons and pron) ? The users connects to the onboard email server and submit the emails while the server does both sending and receiving (could also be on demand initiated from the users). Rules could be set to limit the sizes of messages and compression and encryption (the latter is probably not in line with the ham regulations, ham frequencies are used). All of the pieces are available in the Linux community and it's mostly a question of putting it all together (an exception with the SSB radios, the 705 has build in "soundcard" and connects via USB which may make things easier). Nice when you are using sat or SSB, but less relevant when on 4G and wifi.

When close to shore a seamless transition to 4G mobile network and wifi (using a router, my project uses a large outdoor antenna and relay the wifi signal, see RPi as a router).  Again rules could allow TV streaming while on wifi and preventing it on 4G or other less capable and expensive networks.

Have fun,
Ole
