I own a navicom RT550 with AIS . connected to my RPB3+ is perfect
My VHF has gps chips. it receive gps position from openplotter and a gps dongle. I will connect my Garmin 620 to my Navicom RT 550 by cable. I THINK it is the best. A recent VHF with DSC is more efficient in cas of problem.

Mistake "my VHF has no gps chip
