RPi4 HDMI, no display, common problem?
#1
Hello All.
Hope this is the right spot to post this.

I am new to the Raspberry, so please bare with me.

Hardware, a Raspberry pi 4, with the original MOITESSIER Hat
Software, a fresh NOOBS install per the instructions, on a new 32 gig ssd card

Issue, heres the trouble, im have tried to hook the pi up to 2 different (but older) HDMI capable monitors, with 2 different cables. but no signal (i assume, as the monitors keep saying no signal), the Pi shows the correct lights flash during boot-up and the Hat lights are on as well, there is a door chime noise, after the pi boots up i assume, which is some sort of system check or error msg (Probably? )

i have seen this can be a problem for others, but can find no real fix, that has worked for me.

Is there anyone who might be so kind as to help walk a noob through some of this?
let me know if you need more info from me, which i assume you will Smile

Thank you all.

Hello, Cyric,

If I understand you correctly, you can hear from the doorbell.
This means that the OS has booted and is not still in the boot process. Maybe you already tried the following, but I will write it again.

Source on monitor/TV correctly selected?

Try another monitor/TV.

Try another RPI. Maybe it has a bug in the HDMI slot.

Try another HDMI cable.

That's all I can think of for now.
Greetings Jürgen

Hay Luckbert thanks for the reply

Yes, i can hear the doorbell. so if what you say is correct (and i do not believe you are) the Pi is booting and sending a signal to the speakers on the TV? odd.

Source on monitor, i will double check but i believe i have it correct.

I have tried both TV and a Monitor with no success

I do on have another Pi to try  sorry on that one.

I have tried 2 HDMI cable, one being the cable that came with my Kit

Sooooo im a bit stumped .....

Hello
That's weird,
Have you ever tested another OS?
Do you use IMG or Noobs ?
Can you access the Pi headless? E.g. with VNC?
It is a strange phenomenon!

Greetings Jürgen

Hello again Luckbert

I just tested the primary TV, and it works fine on the PC i am using right now
I initially tried IMG and now have NOOB installed now
I have not attempted to try the headless, as this PC doesn't have onboard WiFi and i'll have to acquire a dongle for it.

Yes this has me stumped

I don't know how HDMI cables work, but its almost like there's just not enough signal strength from the Pi? is that a thing?

Again i am a complete Pi Noob here so bear with my ignorance.

OOoooooooK

my mind isn't cut out for this kind of stuff anymore....LOL

I now have the TV working.

i had to edit the config file turning on

hdmi_safe=1
hdmi_drive=2

and boost from 4 to 9

config_hdmi_boost=9

now can anyone tell me if what i have done is safe?

Have you checked your power cables are powerful enough. If the power supplied to the pi is not enough, it will not enable the hdmi. I found with some displays even the "official" plug was not enough and used an Apple MacBook Pro power brick
