I would hire a developer
#1
Hello Folks,

THe anchor watch in Open CPN could be enhanced with an important feature: it happens many times that sailors go to shore for shopping/eating out/etc. and leave their boat at anchor. If the boat starts to drag anchor during that time, no notification gets to the sailor. In such a situation, the sailor is often outside any wifi range -without a local simcard even 3g coverage is in question. The current anchor alarm in Open CPN does have an option to add a non-defined command - this command could be coded in a way that the anchor alarm would trigger a call or sms notification to a preset phone number.

I would hire someone who can code such a command. As Open CPN is open-source, I would also make the code freely available - hence i am searching for someone who is willing to take such an assignment - for helping the community, and also for some financial support.

If interested, please send me a message.
Best regards,
Tibor

You can also use the gammu tool.

sudo apt install gammu-smsd gammu

After installing and configuring it, just type the command:

Code:
gammu sendsms TEXT yourdestinationphonenumber -text "Hurry, your anchor is draggin .."

Thank you!

as I see, i need internet access to send the sms - that is what we lack on the boat when in remote places. i would rather have a solution which work without internet.

As suggested by monos1...

I use a Huawei E180 with a Pay As You Go SIM and it works perfectly. There are plenty of other USB modems that work just as well. There is also a lot of information on the web to help you.

Good luck

SMS (without internet) was implemented in OpenPlotter 1 using gammu. This feature has not been ported yet to OpenPlotter 2 but it is in the TODO list.

I am working on openplotter-iot app right now. This OpenPlotter app is in charge of managing Signal K thresholds and notifications, visual and sound alarms, MQTT, running external commands... and it would be the place for this SMS feature too. I will publish the first alpha for this app in some days but it will contain only the basic stuff. Let me know in case someone wants to work on the SMS part.

By the way, hiring or paying someone for specific tasks to be added to OpenPlotter (or OpenCPN) sounds like a good idea. This kind of sponsorship could help us a lot and could lighten the workload of main developers.
