Hi,

when connecting the pot the right way no additional resistance is needed.

Look at this:

If the wisher of pot is connected to the analog input of the arduino (the right way) then the pot can´t burned cause there´s no possibility that a high currrent flows over the pot. The analog input of arduino prevent this.

The only possibility to destroy the pot is an incorrect connection.

To prevent the pot from burning to death is a resistor 1k in line with the wisher. But what ever you do, you have to recognize for shure what is the connection of the wisher.
Therefore you have to read the manual of the actuator and investigate witch wire is the right one.

In some manuals the connections are shown like this:

   

You can see, that the lines above the pot are drawn in a way that does not fit with the sequence of the connections in the scheme. If you just take a fast look it´s possible to confuse the connection for the wisher with one of the end connections. This is then a deadly mistake.
