Question
Hiu All,

I am trying (and failing) to build a replacement system for the now obsolete Moitessier HAT.

The only sensor I have working properly is the AdaFruit Ultimate GPS.

I have a MPU9255 MPU-9255 3-Axial Accelerometer + Gyroscope + Magnetometer GY-9255 which does not give me data (separate thread on this forum)

I also have a DVB-T + FM + DAB that may, or may not be working. I have no antenna and am too far away from AIS targets anyway to test properly- but I am getting 0 (NaN %) communication from the device in SignalK. I did follow the documentation, and get a green, active and running openplotter-rtl_ais process, but nothing in SignalK.

It could very well be I have all the wrong hardware, there's a lot on offer, and differences between sensors are, at least to me, not always obvious.

So PLEASE, can someone knowledgeable make a list of reccommended hardware for use with an OpenPlotter (Pi) installation? Maybe even with a link to wiring / installing / debugging?
Sad to say that I am now seriously looking at alternatives..

Thank you for your support!

Now looking at https://www.exp-tech.de/en/sensors/accel...ed-compass for a compass- anyone already using it?

you will not get data in Signal k without antenna and AIS targets.
that SDR device will work but it needs calibration

that compass is based on the BNO055 and it will not work properly

Hi Sailoog,

Thanks for your reply.
For compasses I now understand the MPU-9255 is the recommended sensor. Did not know the BNO055 will not work (shame as it seems to be the only one that is tilt-corrected out of the box..?..)

The broader question is if there is a list of either supported, or unsupported sensors? That might prevent much frustration, at least for some..  Confused

Thanks again!

Sailoog is pretty much single handedly developing this platform and, I believe, it is up to the userbase to help out where they can and with most people not being coders, documentation is where this could be beneficial.  If every user added a link to hardware that worked on the appropriate page then we would have the list you are referring to.

Take a look at the CAN page I created https://openplotter.readthedocs.io/en/la...n_app.html - I call out the board I used and have structured it so others can add theirs.

this isn't really a message for you (as a new user) but if anyone else has known good hardware and wants to add it, send me a message and I will update the docs

Hi Techstyle,

I realize the workload Sailoog (must be) under- my question was not aimed at him, per sé. (although I certainly do not mind him answering)
I have read many individual posts, some are helpful in suggesting functioning hardware, others are confusing or only partly answering.

I was hoping we, as uses, could create a simple list of hardware that works (proven) or does definitely not work. Preferably without discussion.

So: For Compass:

Magnetic sensors

BNO055 - Does not work
MPU9255 - Works (recommended)
MPU9250 - Works (replaced by 9255)
LSM303DLHC - Unknown
HMC5883L - Unknown
