Nice RS485/CAN Hat
#1
Hi all,

I'm in the process of adding NMEA2000 gear on my boat for the first time, so I've been on the lookout for a CAN hat. I was already using a WaveShare dual-channel RS-485 hat, and originally tried another WaveShare dual-channel CAN hat. It did work, but I didn't like the idea that I literally had three hats stacked on top of my RPI.

I looked at the PICAN hat, but it seems a little bit expensive and doesn't include RS485. I did see the little CAN/RS485 hat from WaveShare, but it only has a single RS485 interface, and I need two.

So, I found this from Innomaker. It's an isolated two-channel RS-485 and single-channel CAN hat. It seems well built, the screw connectors are nice and large and it was easy to set up. Much cheaper than a PICAN hat, and it includes RS485.

Nice little board for those who have both NMEA0183 and NMEA2000 onboard. In my case, I'm even bringing some ancient SEATALK stuff in, and thanks to the excellent work by Teppo and the rest of the SignalK team, it all comes together flawlessly.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

(2021-11-28, 08:57 PM)Thanks very much, Andy - I was looking for just this, I think!Could I ask a question -I have an opto isolated serial connection at the moment (havent fitted it yet) for my old seatalk instruments, but I see I cant use Bluetooth with serial... Would the HAT get round the problem?  I use a BT kbd and mouse - and have no USB slots free now for a wireless KBD dongle.  I am also using a GY-91 for baro/temperature and magnetic compass on the i2c bus. Fin Wrote: Hi all,

HATs generally plug on to the 40pin connector on the top of your PI, so you wouldn't need any USB ports. In my case, I have the Seatalk GPIO connections plugged on to the top of the hat.

Interesting. One thing I do like about the PiCAN-M is that it powers the Pi off the NMEA 2000 network, rather than needing a separate power supply.

Has anyone tried this one? Seems to fit the bill

I haven't used that one but I have used this one: https://amzn.to/3kvNAmZ

it isn't isolated but is also made by Waveshare and has the same CAN controller and I can say it was very easy to implement (the process is laid out in the OP docs) and Waveshare make quality components, I have used them for a variety of projects now.

I think the one you identified does what the PiCAN does (including powering the Pi) but for 1/3 of the price!!

I would not use the onboard power stuff though, without fears of somebody just shutting the power off and currupting the SD card, but that may not be a concern for you
