Compass heading only after setup in opencpn

I have installed openplotter with opencpn. When Opencpn starts it has the data from signalK and pypilot has the data from the compass unit.
But Opencpn has no compass data (the pypilot plugin does have the data). When I open the options in Opencpn and press 'ok' without changing anything the compass data is there and the boat is heading in the right direction. When I close Opencpn and open it again the compass heading is gone again.
When I give opencpn a target to navigate to pypilot has the gps option running but the direction is totally wrong eventhough the NMEA bearing is right??

What can be the problem??

Would like to test the pypilot this summer!!
