I use an arduino with the basic software serial sketch.

But how have you connected the BMV-instrument to your Arduino?

It's actually a mppt controller I have but the interface looks the same VE direct . 4 connectors, 5v, ground, rx & TX. I used dupont female wires to connect onto the pins, not ideal by far but works just. Thinking back (not on the boat today) it was probably an arduino mega as it has several serial in/out pins so victron TX onto arduino rx, rx to TX and ground. Arduino gets its power from usb. Then the win laptop found the victron straight away with the arduino echoing the 2 serial ports.

The connector is named "JST 2.0mm PH 4Pin" , the pinout and the logic is in the whitepaper "vedirect protocol" at the victron website

Thanks. :-)
I ended up buying the original cable, and have had it running for quite a while.
