Compass options
#1
Hi all,

I am putting together my OpenPlotter and I realised that it would be good if I had the input from a compass, so I can calculate the leeway from COG and heading.

From your experience, is there any point in using with a cheap "digital compass" like a QMC5883L or a CMPS14? Can I plug and play in OpenPlotter? Or should I drop the whole idea and go for a proper fluxgate compass?

TIA,
Yiannis

Hi Yiannis,
I have Sparkfun ICM-20948 that gives the magnetic heading. I haven't tested the accuracy yet, because the boat is winterized.

I bought a BerryIMU (V2) and it gave me funny results, I swapped it for this one:

HiLetgo MPU9250 GY-9250 - https://amzn.to/3FEeHUa

and I got the same results, moved the position/orientation around and now both work fine.   They are not plug and play - you need to calibrate and get the position on the boat right.  Away from power cables, away from motors, speakers, etc - but those are considerations for Fluxgate compasses as well

I have pretty accurate heading and pitch and roll now
