Until now I have always used the windows remote desktop but now Openplotter 0:10 no longer connects and this error
(VNC works)

Yes there is a problem with realvnc.
Try:
sudo apt-get purge realvnc* xrdp
sudo apt-get install xrdp

If you want to have xrdp with copy and paste you have to install xrdp 0.91 debian/testing
