Well well well, it seems iot was all my fault. I was connected to the marin's 5GHz network, not the 2.5gz. Change the network, and now it's working.

still doesn't work here, esp32 running micropython won't connect to openplotter AP when Pi is AP and connected to network using just the internal wifi adaptor. Not that it's too much of a hardship really here.
