I'm running Pi4 with the free charts cm93. I'd like too to move to Pi5 plus NVM etc with o.charts, but before changing almost everything I'd need to know more about the power consumption of Pi5 vs. Pi4. Is really so much higher?

Difficult one to answer, its up in terms of the Pi4, maybe 1/4 increase and if you really push it then it uses more power, however what I've found is that its far less stressed completing the same tasks, so my CPU is lower than before and it rarely increases to the same level. I would have to run some tests, but just from a user experience point of view, I can actually use this one board as a small PC and that really is a first.

thing i have found with RPI5 is that the heat issues and reliability are not necessarily worth the extra performance.
My RPi4b's just work, I have one controlling Victron Solar that's been on 24/7 for over a year.
Compare with RPI5 with Macarthur I have used for Openplotter, I'm on my third now in a year and i have given up.
I have now gone back to. 4B for the Signalk as I know it wont let me down.
I also use Elfin EW10 and EW11 and wifi in preference to the Macarthur.

ALso if its raw horsepower, the Orange Pi 5 Pro is much much faster with less issues on heat.

I really hope whatever comes next in RPI stable handles heat better.

What heat sink are you using on your Pi5 and is it completely sealed in?

I have the powered RPI5 Active Cooler.  I have tried it in several locations including behind the dashboard out of the sun etc etc.

I also have tried a DeskPi case as well.

I tried the 3d printed case but it worked better with just the base unit from that so i could mount it on the wall.

In general the RPI5s have been very unreliable, but i never have issues with the 4b

Are you logging the temperature, if so, where does it normally sit?

i did at the time, but to be honest i have had the RPI5s fail, i have returned for replacement. Their general reliability has not been great.
I have not had a 4b fail yet. Plus i am also using Orange Pis more as they are faster and run cooler.
Even the Orange Pi Zero 2W is a wicked little device and much cheaper.
For my main Nav display on deck, i use a Orange Pi 5 Pro. Again, it doesnt get hot even inside a windscreen and it flies.
