Update on this - I now have the sensors on the system (in my i2c wiring I'd somehow swapped a sda and scl wire).
Once I corrected this, the sensors showed up and are working as expected however I still have the "service not running error" when the check system runs.
I can live with this, but just a bit weird that the service is not running but the i2c sensors are working......
