The RED LED of death
#1
hi
This is doing my head in,
I have rpi5, Macarthur Hat, and extra Waveshare USB to 4ch RS485 (for wind speed and direction which is excellent by the way)
I have Maiana and the Power Module for shutting down.
I did also have NMEA 2000 cabling and was powering the unit via that.
So I have removed the NMEA2000 completely as part of fault finding.
I am powering the RPI now direct to 12v battery (with a fuse) with decent cable.
I have powered the Waveshare separately for the same reason.
I have fitted a fan in the box and set up Signal k to tell me the temperature of the RPI.
The last time it died (went to Red LED=) it was only 39.7 degrees C so I just don't buy its heat. Also fails to boot often when its stone cold.
I would love to use this thing, but it's just totally unreliable. I cannot be out at sea and have it die on me; it could be the proverbial eggs in one basket.
Does anyone have anything else to try on this issue?
Is there a Linux config change? Something else to monitor?
Sometimes it dies when I first switch it on; no matter how many times I press the button, it won't boot. Sometimes it boots and runs for 5 minutes, sometimes it runs for 6 hours. But eventually it always dies,
Desperately seeking help!

your power module is not the problem because you tried another one we sent you.

temperature is not the problem.

If you have to press the home button more than once, then the known issue with Raspberry Pi 5 and some SSDs is not the problem because it should boot when you press it only once.

It does not seem like a configuration issue.

I am quite sure you have a power issue or something bad connected but the description of your setup is confusing.

Disconnect absolutely everything from your system and use only the Raspberry Pi, the MacArthur Hat, an SD card and the power module. Nothing else. Follow the manual to connect and configure the power supply and verify that everything is stable before adding anything. Try to clearly describe how you connected everything when the system starts to fail.

ok will run a totally new power line straight to the battery next weekend and start from there.

I have a spare RPI5 so what I may do to keep the original system untouched, is copy the SSD to SD Card, and use the spare RPI5 and Macarthur Hat with the SD card.

Domestic power is 24v and it seems that i have a stepper down from 24v to 12v. I think this must be noisy.

So i have run a new 12v line to the engines which are 12v. So now i have not seen a red led since,

many Thanks
