Info: icm 20948 will arrive Aug.25 but before I can check anything it will be Mid September.
ICM20948 implemented at Rpi5 16GB Ram with modified bookworm lite image without desktop. Trixie seems to be not a good way for pypilot as I had problems with some prerequisites.
I have a documentation of the installation process of about 500 lines with comments in german. In fact the ICM-20948 worked out of the box. The raspi-config habit to alter configfiles has been deaktivated. The repository has been altered to use the native debian repo first and to ask if raspi packages are required. unattended-upgrades enabled (autoreboot deaktivated) Debian native task-lxde-desktop has been installed. (Problems with lxpanel solved) OpenCPN 5.12.4 has been compiled and installed (Special params to enable faster screen output) openplotter has been implemented signalk configured to be the source for opencpn and PyPilot VNC-scraping-server to mirror navigation room rpi5 to cockpit tablet implemented Took me three weeks to get the install done. (Next step will be grafana to get nice gauges) Conclusion: it is really a pity how the raspi developers altered the debian OS without any need to spread their fantasies. Therefore it was a lot of work with the uncertain help of AI to deactivate and bend the rpi5 OS to get the native LXDE. So, if someone wants my rpi5_bookworm_lite_install_latest.sh (copy the commands manually and read the comments!) drop me a note and your email-address. btw. a short description of the GPIO Pinout is included and below: (colors are my wiring!) # RPI5 GPIO Pinout https://pinout.xyz/pinout/pin29_gpio5/ # Motor controller Pins # 17 +3,3V YELLOW # 8 tx GREEN # 10 rx WHITE # 9 GND BROWN # rpi5 icm20948 sensor # 1 +3,3V YELLOW # 3 SDA GREEN/WHITE # 5 SCL WHITE # 6 GND BROWN

Plug for Motorcontroller wiring installed, Motorcontroller installed. Wiring an tests still missing. If you cwant I can send you a list of the used commands to install openplotter & pypilot on native debian 12.

Yves, a very good programmer, is on a long sailing trip.
I provided him a 15A controller to use with a RPi5 and only Pypilot and OpenCPN. We exchanged quite a few messages, even though I'm a big fan of Tinypilot with a Pi Zero W or 2W. He quickly developed his configuration and also designed a Pypilot Wi-Fi remote control with an ESP32 and display. On his boat's website, he describes his setup very well, with an installation guide and a usage example. He also provides an image of the SD card for those less adventurous. https://voiliernana.fr/index.php/technique/ He has just covered 700 nautical miles with Pypilot and his RPi 5, very satisfied and delighted to have reduced energy consumption in night navigation (lights and autopilot) by 40% compared to the consumption with the old autopilot. |
