RPI not starting, Red LED

I need some help,
I build a setup with RPI 5, RPI 7" touchscreen, McAthur HAT, 32 Gb Scardisk  SD card with open plotter
It worked fine last year.
After storing it during the winter I started it up yesterday on a 12V power supply
It started up fine.
After the startup the settings app said there is an update of the Signal K
I pressed update
During the ongoing update the screen went black and the red LED on the Pi lit up.
I restarted. the linux boot started but after about a minute the red LED came back on
I put the image from after my first installation back on the SD card.
Still red LED after about a minute

What can I do to diagnose the problem?

I suggest creating a bootloader disk with RPI Imager -> utilities -> bootloader.  Put the SD card in the pi and it should give you a rapid green flashing.  Remover power and the SD card.  Insert your previous SD card and see if it doesn't solve your issue.  It solved one pi that came up with a firmware issue and another that actually arrive DOA.  Good luck.

I made the bootloader disk, it did not remidy te issue. I now found out that if I remove all the USB devices en put a new image on my SD card It boots correctly. However when I then connect the usb GPS (which works fine on my laptop PC) the system once again stops during the boot sequence and shows the red LED. After removing the GPS it still won't boot (red LED after the first splash screen)
I rewrote the disk image, System starts correctly again. I tried to enable the overlay file system. The system asked to reboot and after reboot, red LED again.

I start to feel frustrated that I can now start the system, but not with GPS which makes the system rather useless..

Is there anything I can look at (log files or something like that that) could tell me what is going on?

Update: I now found that also connecting the mouse will lead to a shutdown. After the shutdown apparently the SD is corrupted again because removing the USB device and restarting once again leads to a red LED after about 10 seconds. rewriting the image makes the system bootable again.

Could you try another power supply perhaps?

Have you tried a card with just plain raspbian on it?
