I did not delete the .opencpn directory yet because I'm not sure if it is still needed and if so, how exactly so I need to do it so I don't lose all my opencpn configuration.

I did a little more digging and it looks like I may be getting a GPS Fix...but what I am noticing is that GPS Status, the little graphic that shows the number of satilites in the dashboard goes blank.  When I switch back to the old connection, the satelites show up again.
